Research for project based on photo realism in FPS war games

Postby FINPROmyles on Thu Nov 17, 2011 9:40 am

Hi I am conducting some research into FPS realism and after some initial research I have come to the conclusion of (and hopefully expand on) on these steps of my research….

Thus can you answer one or more of these would be a great help to me….

1)FPS exploiting USA / UK fears of terrorism?
After initial research some gamers kept saying that lots of war based FPS games (i.e. COD / BF3) are influenced / exploit the fears of terrorism that many people have (9/11 / nuclear war etc.)

2)War based FPS photo-realism weapons - (i.e. BF3 and anything else)?

Hi after more research (i know so much work lol) I keep getting feedback that weapons should be real and have all the necessary (graphics wise / feel / bullet physics / power and even small things like how many rounds you fire at one time (well my bro said that ha ha)

But ultimately what’s your view on weapon realism in FPS games, and are they needed and if so how much (i.e. your views on this subject)

3) No consequences when playing FPS - investigation.......?
Again while researching i came across Gamers love playing FPS games as they can do stuff they can’t do in real life (without the consequences)

A) Thus what’s your view on this good / bad and a bit about why..
B) But also is this a good thing to have, in that without consequences gamers could get desensitized with violence and thus may act out in real life

4)Goal based missions and competitively?

But basically do you think this is important or not when playing these games (i.e. do you want this). And what does it give to the overall game (i.e. playability / teamwork)…………

5)Finally Is teamwork in FPS important question?

Do you feel teamwork in FPS games (i.e. BF2 / 3) is good, in that does it reflect teamwork in real world (i.e. armies / paintball stuff like that). Finally would you like to have teamwork more involved in games (i.e. everyone actually does it and doesn’t do a Rambo lol)

Sorry for the amount of question but thought I might as well put all of them on here in one fell swoop

1: Don't really believe so, it's just the current craze, like WW2 a couple years ago.
2: No, playability, fun, and balance are all more important than realism, unless you are playing an ARMA 2 type game.
3:
A: Maybe, but I doubt looking too far into it will do anything positive, people play fun games, as the example of TF2 shows.
B: Sure, playing violent video games desensitizes you, to video game violence. The real world is very different than the one on your computer, and the one on your computer will not desensitize you to the real world.
4: Death match is fun for messing around in, but goals are always superior, especially for support classes (In class based games)
5: Teamwork is very good, but having it can be frustrating when the teams are uneven in skill.

1: Very slightly yes, letting people destroy things they fear is a viable marketing strategy, but on the other hand I agree with the current craze thing.

2: Needed on most real weapons to a certain degree IMO, but only if your trying to make a realistic game.

3: Slightly, I have an outlet in tf2 for a way to burn things like crazy as i am kind of a pyromaniac, but mostly I do it for seeing how well I can do and plain fun. I believe it also desensitizes some people to real world violence, but mostly towards seeing it or hearing of it, without encouraging them to do it.

4: I like this very much, adds fun, reason to try harder, and teamwork when done right.

5: I like teamwork immensely, as it encourages you to be nicer to your fellow gamers, as opposed to all the times I got called a kill stealing @$$hole when adding support fire in Halo.
