How to play as a group?

Postby Majinalchemy on Sat Oct 25, 2008 5:40 pm

My team and I play a lot in friendly scrims (we're working up to competition.)

And we get crushed more often than not; normally due to our teamwork dissolving. The initial push is just fine and dandy, but once a few people die, it's like we can't get back together and push. We all group together in a hall, and a couple stickies just kill us all. This continues until the clock ends.

What can we do to clean this up a bit, how do good teams manage it? Personally I am quite frustrated with the whole thing. :)

Anything in response would be nice. TYVM.

Comming from being part of a starting team, it sounds like to me that you need a clear-cut leader that can organize you and keep the team in line. Having a strategy and keeping too it is needed too. Since our team started scrimming we have yet to lose one except on a server where the whole team has 100+ latency. Peticurally we appointed a seasoned scrim captain that played on the server and became part of our clan. As we recruited, we didn't just recruit anybody... we went out and got people that knew how to play. Overall it's all about the leadership, my best advice to find someone who knows what they're doing in a competitive setting, b/c once it goes 6v6 all the rules that normally apply go to the wayside.

I know exactly what you mean, Majin. It always seems to happen to my team on Dustbowl stage 1 CP2, assuming we don't cap it straight away. You'd think a good tactic would be to hole up in the tunnel on the left and charge a few ubers, but we always end up getting hit from behind by some random critikaze soldier.

However the answer IS always ubers (after organisation, of course). Ubers thick and fast. Make sure your team has 2-3 medics, and make sure above anything that they don't die until they pop their uber. Go for the double or triple uber if you can, but don't go too far out of your way for it. A single uber with backup is usually more than effective enough (if the uberee is any good).

It's all about the situation. If they've go a tonne of sentries, uber a demo and take them all out, then attack while they recover. If it's just a really defensible point like Dustbowl stage 1 CP2 (after they get defences up, anyway), uber a heavy or pyro, and concentrate on fending them away from the point and covering your teammates as they cap rather than rushing their spawn or whatever else you might want to do. And while you're at it, join in the discussion on the uber guide - there's a lot of sense between Samadhir's ears (ololol).

I've gotten stuck on Dustbowl stage 1 cp2 quite a few times also. when that happens, I go engineer, hoping to set up some kind of forward base, but it just never works. Another problem, which really gets to me is spies sapping teleporter entrances in front of the caves. So incredibly lame.

Teamwork on all pubs is non-existent aside from Medics. Why, TF2? Why? :(
Does that come in a tin?

That's pretty much why people play scrimms.

People on servers that you can reach simply by pressing "start playing" are usually newcomers just getting used to the game and the older elitist players, making cooperation a difficult task. Very few actually use a mic, and text chat is time consuming. And then there's alltalk 32-man fast-respawn servers. There are some rare non-comp servers that actually have heavy communication and good coordination between teammates, but most of the players on there is usually from the website or clan that owns the server.

Personally, I recommend TF2Lunatic very highly.
