Vanilla kills: a challenge

Postby Predatory Ameoba on Wed Jun 06, 2012 4:49 pm

I had recently been playing around with different weapon combos, and started using vanilla loadouts just to for fun. then I noticed: "WOW, ALOT OF THIS VANILLA STUFF IS ACTUALLY AWESOME!" I have come to the following conclusions:

Demoman:
full vanilla weapons loadout is boss (yes, including the bottle, which is actually my vanilla melee ive killed with the most).

Pyro:
vanilla melee isnt great, but standard shotty is awesome and now my most used secondary (just traded for a strange!) and vanilla flamer's extra afterburn in combo with good airblast costs is a lot more dangerous than most give it credit for.

Scout:
vanilla primary and secondary are awesome, I would prefer a different melee, but still usable.

Medic:
the origional Ubercharge really trumps all others, and syringe gun is a good weapon. Would go for a different melee, though (probably Ubersaw).

Heavy:
great primary, and your secondary will sometimes get you a kill too. once again I would change melee.

spy:
I actually am usng stock knife+ stock watch alot aftr abackstabbing streak at 18 health (not possible with most other knives). Standard primary is actually very lethal, you can sometimes gun down oncoming pyros iwho rush you if you start shooting fast enough (this is without random crits!).

I didnt test any other classes enough to form an opinion, but I would like to issue aa challenge:
dust off those old stock weapons an get some kills with them! see how you do and report back to this page about it, maybe it will suggest some productive tactics or something, but mostly I hope its fun!

I use stock weapons a lot, and they really aren't any worse than unlocks. They don't have any drawbacks and is very basic. Outside of a few universally accepted direct upgrades, I'll usually go all stock weps.

Personally, I feel that stock weapons are the most versatile. They can suit any playstyle and is useful in most situations.

I know that alot of people have some idea that weapon power is based on how recently valve released the gun. When I first started playing, I know I did (I still have a horrible memory of trying to cap the intel lugging a spun up barass beast the first time I played heavy on CTF :( ). This is mostly for those kind of people, just in case any magically show up. I also wanted to make the point that some weapons with accepted "better" options (which I usually see stated as degreaser over flamer) are not always better in the overwhelming way most think.
