Top down map view jpegs?

Postby casale on Fri Jul 25, 2008 12:51 am

Hey,

Does anyone have any top-down map graphics? Would be good to use as directions for the best sentry placement on each map. I have some really good places to share on Goldrush and Dustbowl PL, if anyone can help that would be great...

cheers

Funny thing actually, there was someone around a while ago, way back in the early days of the old forums, saying he was making/had some top-down maps and was wondering if I'd like them. I was going to get back to him but never did.

I agree, it is a good idea, I just don't know how to go about it. If you fly up too high the map gets clipped to shreds, and if you're too close, you can't see enough in a single screenshot, so you'd have to fly around, get a bunch, and piece them together. I think this is actually a lot more possible than I thought - evidently there's a button for go straight up in spec mode, so you could look straight down and press that. Anyway, then you'd have to do something about insides as well, and it all gets very tricky.

If anyone has a plan, I'd love to hear it. Oh, and welcome casale :D

Wow, wait. Where are these from? And more importantly what do they look like? :P Sucks to be capped to 52kbps. Thanks anyway, I guess I'll find out in half an hour.

Naughty indeed, but they look very similar to the overheads Valve has for the death maps in the TF2 stats section, only with colour. I'm guessing those old drunken bastards didn't create them...

There are mixed images..
The All folders have the full map top down in each folder.
And the others are top downs on highlights or specific points around the maps, ideal for going into detail with a strategy or to show the range of cover for an SG.

Getting back to the top-downs - very nice, Mister Majinalchemy. Any thoughts on what to do with them? Maybe make another Gallery for top-downs... perhaps the sentry guide can be next. It'd be nice to have something big done for the heavy update, like the sentry guide, or a custom maps section (sigh, one day), or some massive big forum feature (3x10^8 cookies if you get that reference).

The ones posted by Majinalchemy could be used for the following:

Highlight high traffic areas - Useful for spy's, Engineers & also other classes.

Highlight some SG positions - Useful for Engineers, but also could help spy's know where people may have SG's as it would highlight some 'common' places.

Fastest or most efficient scout routes

High combat zones on each map - Kinda like traffic but this is where the most action or combat generally takes place.. should be generalized as I am sure only valve has access to that level of reporting...

Anyway, some high level ideas I am sure people can enhance, comment on etc.

The images as stated are high level top down shots with 'feature' shots around parts of the levels.
You should be able to get more customized shots by loading up TF2 with cheats on and then no clipping around to highlight the exact spots you need.

I made them, probably could have organized them better too, but, whatever.

Touche. I meant Majinalchemy all along. Anyway, they certainly could come in handy. I'll have to have a think about how best to do the sentry guide, given that it's winning the poll atm, and for good reason. It is the most... I guess substantive (I use that word a lot, don't I?) of the options, and it should be very possible, though considerable work.

EDIT: Work is under way in the Sentry Guide thread, so if anyone's got some ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Hey guys,

Quick update. I got an email from the/an admin of TacticsBoard (Carl) informing me of the site's existence. It seems like exactly what this thread needs, and as though it could be quite a help to at least a few of you. I recommend y'all check it out, regardless of how you use it. I've set up a TF2S team (called TF2Strategy.com) that shouldn't be too hard to join... maybe. I don't know I find the account interface to be a little confusing, but the actually application is pretty neat.

EDIT: Password to our board is "tf2s" (no quotes).
