Why meet the pyro doesn't appeal to me

Postby Predatory Ameoba on Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:47 pm

Ive figured out why I didnt really like meet the pyro. I myself am kind of a pyromaniac, but my love of fire comes frome my amazement at how fire consumes objects and leaves barely anything behind. The thought of A pyromaniac who doesnt really understand what fire is saddens me. Also, because Valve has released so many things (items, bits in videos, etc.) that would make it seem like the pyro loves fire, I thought it seemed odd to suddenly make it seem like the pyro is unaware of fires true nature. I really hope the pyro's hallucinations arent constant...

On the other hand I did like some parts of Meet the Pyro. Especially the fact that he/she/it seems to strike immense fear into the other mercenaries. The bits that showed actual fire were awesome. When the Pyro locks the medic in the barn with the axe and burned the barn down around the guy, I thought it was HILARIOUS.

I didn't like it either, but I thought some bits were too dark, like when he locks the Medic in the barn. Poor Medic :(

Too dark? Really? Pyromania is a dark thing. To be a pyromaniac, in my opinion, you have to both have a childlike sense of wonder and a large amount of sadism to go along with it. Part of the beauty of fire is the pain and fear it causes. When I light something on fire and laugh, I am not laughing at how pretty the fire is. I am laughing at the fact the fire is like a living thing, consuming the material in its path, the top predator in a world of flammable objects.

I have recently heard a theory that Pyroland is a metaophor to symbolise how happy the pyro is when burning things, not a hallucination. Of course Valve is never going to confirm or deny this (or pretty much anything about the pyro), but it makes me feel a little better. But I still dont like the video.

One thing the video did have is an awesome soundtrack. The Lovin' Spoonfull isnt what I might listen to normally, but they were one of the first bands to really try new stuff with electric guitars. I would burn someone to death while listening to that.

Im really starting to realize how differently everyone else sees fire fom me. I think I first started really thinking about it when I got in trouble for lighting up my bed.
